South Australia has suffered a big setback before the Sheffield Shield final. Fast bowler Brendan Doggett is out due to a hamstring injury. Doggett played a crucial role in last year's final. Unfortunately, he has not recovered in time for the match against the Victoria cricket team, which starts on Thursday at Junction Oval.
South Australia aims to win back-to-back titles after ending a long drought with last season’s victory. The right-arm bowler was key in that win over Queensland cricket team. He took 11 wickets and was named player of the match at Karen Rolton Oval. However, he has not played since injuring himself in February.
Head coach Ryan Harris confirmed that despite efforts to speed up his recovery, the risk was too high. “He hasn’t come up—we tried our best,” Harris said. “Going into a final, you sometimes take risks, but this is probably too much, too fast.” Harris also considered the long-term view, saying that Doggett could be in the running for greater honors later this year.
“He has a big August coming up with the Australian team, so we want to make sure we’re not pushing him too hard,” he added. Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey recognized the setback but still felt positive about the team’s chances. “That’s why you play Sheffield Shield cricket, to win titles,” Carey said.
“We’re playing our best cricket at the right time of year.” To fill Doggett’s spot, South Australia has brought in pacer Wes Agar and batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, who is returning after pulling out of the Pakistan Super League. Victoria, who finished at the top of the standings, will host the final and are seen as favorites.
However, South Australia remains confident as they look to defend their title and build on the success of last season’s historic win.
