MS Dhoni Likely to Miss First Two Weeks of IPL 2026 – CSK Faces Early Setback
The Chennai Super Kings have suffered an early setback ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, as veteran wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni is expected to miss the first two weeks of the tournament due to a calf strain.
The franchise confirmed on the opening day of the competition that Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation and may not be available during the early phase of the season. CSK will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against the Rajasthan Royals, followed by matches against the Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Delhi Capitals within the first two weeks.
In Dhoni’s absence, newly signed wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is the leading candidate to take over wicketkeeping duties. Samson is also expected to open the batting alongside CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The squad also includes backup wicketkeeping options in Urvil Patel and young prospect Kartik Sharma.
Samson joined Chennai Super Kings from Rajasthan Royals in a major trade deal that saw Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran move the other way. Meanwhile, Kartik Sharma generated significant buzz after being signed for INR 14.20 crore following impressive performances in domestic cricket. Urvil Patel, who was retained by the franchise, made a brief but impactful appearance last season, recording a strike rate of over 200.
During the 2025 IPL season, Dhoni played all 14 matches for CSK, mostly batting in the lower order. He scored 196 runs across 13 innings at a strike rate of 135.17, with an unbeaten 30 as his highest score. Despite his efforts, Chennai Super Kings had a difficult campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table with just four wins.
The injury concerns do not end there for CSK. Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to a hamstring injury. He has been replaced in the squad by fellow Australian pacer Spencer Johnson.
CSK’s bowling attack will be led by New Zealand pacer Matt Henry, supported by Khaleel Ahmed, Gurjapneet Singh, Zak Foulkes, Anshul Kamboj, Ramakrishna Ghosh, Jamie Overton, and Mukesh Choudhary. Batting allrounder Shivam Dube also adds depth to the squad.
With key players sidelined at the start of the season, Chennai Super Kings will be hoping to manage the opening phase effectively and build momentum as they aim for a strong comeback after a disappointing 2025 IPL campaign.
